The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Grimsby Town 1 Wolves 1

GRIMSBY TOWN this evening pulled out of the bottom three with a gutsy performance against a strong Wolves side, eventually finishing 1-1.

Two early goals settled the matter but both sides had chances to win it, Grimsby eventually finishing the stronger to ensure of a point that puts them above Walsall in the table.

The small crowd were treat to a spectacular start when Phil Jevons cleverly over-headed a bouncing ball into the Wolves net in just the second minute. His last goal came in front of the TV cameras against Birmingham.

Wolves replied thanks to an error by skipper Paul Groves. A dangerous free kick was flicked into the back of the net by the central defender after the 35-year old was caught in two minds.

It may have been an end to the scoring but both teams pushed for the elusive winner. Neither side forced the keepers into making great saves although it was Coyne who was troubled on a couple of occasions by Wolves' high balls and crosses into the Grimsby area.

In the second half Wolves pushed forward and used their substitutes in an attempt to snatch the tie away from the battling Mariners. However, Mickey Boulding's pace on the break caused Muscat problems all night and twice the lively striker looked set to open up the opposition's defence, only for his final pass or shot to be wayward.

In the final few minutes Wolves did have the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for offside. Grimsby then finished the more dominant and could have taken all three points if Coldicott, Jeffrey and Boulding didn't waste their final shots.

Overall it was a point gained for Lennie Lawrence's men and two lost for Dave Jones'. Grimsby, like West Brom at the weekend, denied Wolves top spot.
