Walsall Report Card

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 17/12/2001

DR FISHY has compiled match statistics and a report card for the Grimsby Town side that lost 4-0 away to Walsall. The Doctor was most unimpressed with what he saw, and awarded the team six of the very best!

Home > 2001-2002 Season > Report Cards > Walsall(a)

Danny Coyne Once again made numerous saves just to keep the score realistic(ish). Still his kicking was, as always, poor and at times he lost possession straight away. At times (most actually) he was left alone with 2/3 red shirts looming down on him. Would be unfair to say he was responsible for the defeat and at least he clapped the fans at the end.

Grade C|

Alan Neilson The ex-Fulham man is quite clearly, either not a right back or not good enough. On several occasions he was absent from his position, offered very little support for Butterfield who returned to ‘favour’.

Grade D|

Tony Gallimore After a run of 10/20 great games Gally had a real stinker, losing his footing, slicing into touch. Got skinned by Wrack every time and on the few occasions his passes stayed in-play they were too long for Boulding to run onto.

Grade D- |

Paul Groves The skipper didn't lead by example at all and was very, very shaky in defence. Getting outpaced by the super slow Brett Angel must have cast doubt in his mind over whether or not he can carry on.

Grade D|

Paul Raven Despite not been a fans favourite, Raven was the only player to have his name sung (in a L-I-V-V-O fashion) except the obvious chants for Coyne. Made several important interceptions and somehow managed to keep up with Byfield for some of the game. Him and Coyne held the Saddlers attack back for as long as they could

Grade C+|

Danny Butterfield Again the Boston born winger, right back, midfielder had a disappointing game and offered very little to the cause. Saying that I'm going to lay off him as he did something that very few others did, he didn't do anything drastically wrong.

Grade C-|

Michael Boulding Apart from a chance in the first half which he wasted and a good solo run in the second, Michael offered very little for Town, but he ain't ever going to run back 60 yards put in a strong challenge and release a striker with a defence splitting pass. He’s there cause he’s fast, shame that no-one gave him the real option to run though.

Grade C-|

Stacy Coldicott Stace seemed to have stepped back 3 years in this game, gone was the battling hustler that had slowly become a fans favourite. In his place was the little bald guy who can't pass 5 yards. Got in the way at times and was a real disappointment.

Grade D- |

Menno Willems To say that Menno was rubbish is an understatement. He wasted everything, the only thing he did was drop back and help with the threat of Angel (Brett, not Juan Pablo) in the air. Worst moment had to be his indirect free kick in the 2nd half. Instead of blasting it or even laying it off, he managed to fall onto the ball and allow it to trickle towards the wall.

Grade D|

Phil Jevons Another one who did nothing, received very little service though and when the ball did come anywhere near him it was 8 foot in the air, before Roper or Carbon headed away. Needs the ball at his feet but still effort was poor.

Grade D+|

Michael Jeffrey Same as Jevons, no service. The town tactic must have been go direct (no change there then) as we've got a guy who is actually 6 foot. Tried the little through balls but they never came off. Also seemed to have an annoying habit of trying to back-heel it (this may have been Jevons actually) which reminded me too much of Tony Rees.

Grade D+|

Wayne Burnett and Chris Thompson were the subs and I won't give them a grade as it wouldn't be fair. In short Burnett was useless, actually I can't even remember him touching the ball and Thompson looked very good. Had he come on at half time we may have snatched a quick goal before their second but we'll never know. Either way Thompson must start at Preston.

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
