Jevons Suspended for Rotherham

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/01/2002

TOWN striker Phil Jevons has received a one match suspension after picking up his fifth booking of the season in last week's cup defeat by York. With Grimsby not playing next Saturday, due to the York cup defeat, the former Evertonian's ban gives Paul Groves a chance to try out a new front pairing.

On-loan Wolves striker Robert Taylor made his debut alongside Jevons up front in Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Crewe, and performed reasonably well in his first outing, showing some good touches and distribution in addition to the physical element which the former Man City frontman adds to the side.

With Town's goalscoring record hardly able to get any worse, and Jevons own dip in form, Groves will have nearly a week to spend deciding who should partner the former £1.5m man in next Tuesday's game against Rotherham. With players returning from injury, Groves has a comparative wealth of choices, with Jeffrey, Boulding, Allen or Thompson all possibilities to replace the 22-year-old Liverpudlian.

The fixture against the Millers is one which Town can ill afford to lose, with the number of opportunities to collect the points needed to avoid relegation diminishing by the week.

  • NEW club captain John McDermott is targeting Wednesday's reserve game against Huddersfield as his first match back since a calf injury in September against Gillingham which has caused him to miss every game since then.

  • TOWN's youth side ran out 3-1 victors at the weekend against their first team counterparts' bogey side York City, who knocked Grimsby out of the FA Cup. Youth Team Results/Fixtures
