Bradley Allen Fears For His Future At BP.

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 24/01/2002

BRADLEY ALLEN Grimsby's striker said today that he is heading for an exit at end of season if he does not help the Mariners in their relegation struggle. After 3 months on the injury list he knows the writing is on the wall if Town do not survive the drop.

With only 16 games remaining he accepts it will not be an easy task and his 3 year contract expires in the Summer.

"I'm playing for my future and I know, as we stand, that unless Grimsby Town stay up it's highly unlikely I'm going to be offered a new contract," said Allen to the Grimsby Telegraph in an interview today.

"After next Tuesday's game against Rotherham we've only got 15 games left and it's crunch time for me. I need to get back in and make my mark immediately. With the position that we're in that means helping us win games. Draws and defeats are no good at all."

Allen has struggled to keep his place in the side after a succession of injuries and is keen to stay at Blundell Park but believes he will be a victim if the cash-strapped club are forced to shed their load of senior players in favour of less expensive youngsters.

"I'm not the sort of person who's ever broken a contract and I don't want to burn any bridges with Grimsby. If there's an offer there for me I'd love to stay and, if the terms were right for me, I'd probably re-sign.

"But I've got to face facts. If we do go down then Grimsby will be in a very difficult situation and there are a few senior players out of contract, and some younger ones, and the chances for us to be given another deal are very slim. You have to be realistic.

"A lot of clubs this summer will be cutting their cloth for smaller squads than in previous seasons. That will mean younger players on a lot less wages."
