Boston United To Face Charges By FA

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 27/06/2002

BOSTON United are in serious trouble with the FA that could eventually cost them their position in the Nationwide League. The Pilgrims achieved promotion at the end of last season with a 2-0 win to give them the championship on goal difference.

They now have to answer 16 charges from the FA who have concluded a month-long enquiry in to the affairs of the club with Manager Steve Evans facing eight charges, the most serious being an alleged procurement of a cash payment of £8,000 be made to a player on June 4, 2002 in an attempt to mislead the FA inquiry.

An FA statement added: "During the course of the inquiry, he (Evans) has made further attempts to persuade another player to mislead the inquiry."

The club faces six charges which relate to lodging at the FA playing contracts containing false details relating to salaries or other remuneration relating to: Paul Bastock, Ken Charlery, James Dick, Paul Wilson, Simon Weatherstone and Mike Marsh. The players themselves have not been charged

Former chairman and current director Pat Malkinson faces two charges, one of lodging at the FA a playing contract containing false details and alleged conduct of Evans regarding a cash payment of £8,000 to a player.

Dagenham & Redbridge who finished as runners up to Boston United are keeping a close eye on the proceedings with their chairman David Andrews, saying "(We are) shocked to hear of the outcome of the month-long FA investigation into the financial affairs of Boston. I am very concerned that the team which pipped us for the Nationwide Conference championship on goal difference just a few weeks ago has now been formerly charged with 'improper conduct' during the course of a season which ended so dramatically and frustratingly for us."

"I believe that it is only fair to our supporters, players and manager that Dagenham & Redbridge should make every effort to see that 'natural justice is seen to be done' within football."
