Chesterfield Preview

TOWN enter this Worthington Cup first round tie on the back of a terrible start to the season in which they have scored one goal and failed to win, making this game all the more important in Town’s search for their first win.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line of this match is that although the cup is not as important as the league, Town cannot afford to lose again. The Grimsby side must be low on confidence and a win this evening, even if it was 1-0 would help restore confidence in the Mariners' ranks. Chesterfield will not be easy though, they have had a decent start and are every capable of scoring goals. Therefore a solid Town performance is needed if they want to get anything from this game tonight.

21 year old Steve Kabba has recently joined Town on a three month loan from Crystal Palace and is definitely one to watch. Despite being given the difficult role of playing up front on his own his qualities have shone and he looks a real asset for the Mariners. Given the right service this evening he could use his pace and determination to good effect against the Spireites defence.

As part of the deal that saw Luke Beckett move to Stockport, Hurst came the other way and has been a revelation up front for the Saltergate Club. His pace and eye for goal has seen him bag four goals this season and the ex Ayr United man even has South African under 21 caps to his name. Although he missed Chesterfield's last game he could return to the starting line up tonight.

  • Town do have doubts over flu victims Danny Coyne, Terry Cooke and Steve Kabba but they should all be fit to play.

  • Kabba, meanwhile has been given permission to play in the Worthington Cup by his employers, Crystal Palace, as has Paul Robinson who should partner Kabba up front in a 4-4-2 formation. This means that one either Paul Groves, Steve Chettle or Simon Ford will be sacrificed, with Chettle the likelier of the three.

  • In midfield, Terry Cooke will probably start again with Alan Pouton in central midfield with Stacy Coldicott.

  • Darren Barnard has picked up the flu' so could miss out, meaning that Stuart Campbell plays on the left side of midfield.

  • Up front, Steve Kabba will be partnered by Paul Robinson, with Darren Mansaram likely to be used from the bench after being handed a two year contract earlier this week.

  • David Reeves has been given permission to play in the Worthington Cup by his club, Oldham and will continue up front. His partner will probably be Glynn Hurst who missed Saturday's game with Crewe with tendentious, but is fit enough to return to the starting eleven. This means that Jon Howard will drop to the bench along with promising youngster Jamie Burt.

  • Mark Hudson has not gained permission to play in the Cup, so either Marcus Ebdon or Keith Rowland will deputise, whilst Mark Innes is out of action for another six weeks.

    Last Time Out

    The last time the Mariners played Chesterfield was in their successful 1997/98, "Wembley" season. In that season, Town played the Spereites in the FA Cup, Auto Windscreen and the league. The last time, however, was on 3rd March (1998) in a dour 0-0 draw at Blundell Park. It was a game of few chances, so with Town beating Chesterfield on the previous two meetings that year, they decided to come and play for a point and they achieved that.
