Chesterfield Report Card

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 13/09/2002

YET another defeat for the Mariners. Can it get any worse? Dr Fishy explains who was good and who was not so good, with the latter category being very overloaded with certain individuals!

Danny Coyne

The reliable Welshman pulled off one or two impressive saves that kept the Mariners in the game. But really, it would have been much easier to have let them in and save us 30 minutes of extra agony.

Grade: C+

John McDermott

Town's best player on the night. Stopped their winger (Brandon) most the evening, who eventually had to be moved onto their left to have an impact on the game. Tried to get Town going down the flanks, but it takes a whole team to do that to get any sort of result.

Grade: B-

Tony Gallimore

Only played one half after going off with an achilles injury. Didn't do much wrong, nor much to catch the eye. Was steady, as usual.

Grade: C

Paul Groves

One of Town's better players, but that's not saying much! Was very commanding in the first half and got Chettle out of jail a few times but he and Chettle were at fault for the goal for sheer sloppy marking. I won't mention his useless "hoofs" - Chettle was much worse.

Grade: C+

Steve Chettle

You can have a great track record with some decent clubs, but it doesn't always mean that you are great. Steve Chettle unfortunately proves this. For an experienced higher league defender, loyal lower league's defender, Paul Groves looked much more assured. Was caught out for pace lots of times by David Reeves of all people! He also kept hoofing the ball up the pitch to absolutely nobody. All this didn't help, neither did it when he fell over in a heap in the centre circle, from which Chesterfield nearly scored.

Grade: D

Terry Cooke

Got a few decent crosses in, but there is only so much a man can do when he doesn't receive the ball. If Town want to break teams down, they need to use people like Cooke as an outlet. He was rarely used all night which was a real shame and is a major problem. Went off to be replaced by the ineffective "winger", Jonny Rowan.

Grade: D+

Alan Pouton

An average display from the all action midfielder who came closest for Town with a chip that hit the underside of the bar and bounced back out to a flock of Chesterfield players. Didn't get forward often enough to help the attacks, something he did so well at the end of last season.

Grade: C-

Stacy Coldicott

A pretty poor game for Stacy. He broke forward more often than Pouton and it showed as many of his passes were long "floaters" that ended up in the arms of their keeper. Afraid to shoot and couldn't make the killer pass. Being up against hustling midfielders like himself didn't help matters.

Grade: D+

Stuart Campbell

This game, of all games proved that he is NOT a left midfielder. Having said that, we had no-one else to play there. He came inside too often and offered no width. He was obviously itching to play in central midfield.

Grade: D

Paul Robinson

Probably his most impressive game for Town. He harried, chased and lunged at their defenders, to no avail. But at least he looked like he was trying, which is more than Jevons ever did. Could turn out to be a reasonable partner for Kabba, given the right service.

Grade: C

Steve Kabba

He too tried and tried and tried. But receiving long, useless, floating balls in no good at all, even if you are Peter Crouch. Given some pressing and searching balls down the channels, he could without doubt cause damage.

Grade: C

Substitutes

Iain Ward

Made some excellent runs going forward when he replaced Gallimore just before half time. He was a little suspect when faced with their impressive winger (Brandon) but had a solid game. A minor bright point to Town's game, but a very minor one at that.

Grade: C-

Darren Mansaram

Had quite a while to impress, but who could tell if he was any good with the poor service he was receiving? Nearly scored with a good header at the end but was often crowded out by the tight Chesterfield defence

Grade: C-

Jonny Rowan

Made little impression on the right hand side, but he was out of position.

Grade: D+

Other substitutes not used:

Shaun Allaway
Paul Raven

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
