Chesterfield Report Card Part 2

DR FISHY'S colleague Professor Cake spent Tuesday night with the good doctor assessing the Town players' performance against Chesterfield as Grimsby crashed out of the Worthington Cup.

Coyne: Didn't have loads to do. Made a fingertip save at the Osmond end. Chose to stay on his line instead of coming out to claim a cross, which led to the goal.

Grade: C

McDermott: Not at his very best, but still one of the best players on the night. He made one or two timely interceptions. Looked good coming forward until his partnership with Cooke was broken up.

Grade: C+

Gallimore: Oh Gally Gally Gally! Gally has one of two types of games. He either plays like he's possessed by the devil and looks like the obvious answer to England's left-sided problems, or wouldn't look out of place in a Sunday League game where last night's rather large consumption of alcohol is obviously taking its toll. Unfortunately for us long suffering Town fans, the latter is a lot more common and this match was no exception.

Grade: D-

Groves: Another solid performance by easily Town's most consistent performer. May have been at fault for the goal, but he saved Town on many occasions before that with good tackles. Also started many 'attacks' from defence.

Grade: B

Chettle: Had a quiet game. Didn't do much excitingly good, but not too much wrong - apart from blazing over from three yards after a scramble in the area from a corner. Helped Mr Ward as much as he could by talking and covering for him.

Grade: C

Cooke: Not a good performance from the supposedly 'exciting winger'. Seems to have turned into the traditional Town midfielder, one that isn't allowed to run with the ball or pass it forward. Better in defence than attack.

Grade: D

Campbell: A player who has bags of potential, we just don't see it. On the few adventures forward he cut in all the time testing the keeper once with a 5mph shot. He's right-footed, so why is he on the left wing? Again, good defensively, made one superb tackle to prevent a second goal on a Chesterfield counter attack.

Grade: D

Coldicott: We should know by now that against a good team Stace plays well. Against a bad team Stace plays poorly. Just didn't get as stuck in as normal and never won the second ball. Had one tame attempt on goal. Took no part in any 'offensive' moves.

Grade: D-

Pouton: Had spells where he played really well, winning tackles and driving forward, but then disappeared from the game for 20 minutes. Curled a superb effort against the bar, he was one of only a few players who looked bothered and battled away.

Grade: C+

Kabba: He has progressively got worse with each performance. His 'miskick', where he totally missed the ball while attempting to shoot summed up Town's performance. His pace did cause some problems but often took one too many men on.

Grade: D

Robinson: Should be a midfielder. Did well at picking the ball up deep and running forward, but drifted across the whole pitch before firing very wide on many occasions. Again, he often worked on his own without passing to team mates and his general control was also poor.

Grade: D+

Subs

Ward: Not exactly Gary Croft standard yet, but Mr Ward does have an excuse for this poor performance. It was only his second game for Town and he did come on and play at left back instead of right back. Defensively a shambles, players simply walked past him and he showed no strength. However, good going forward. He had one effort saved but should have crossed instead. Maybe he got all excited at the possibility of scoring and therefore getting extra pocket money off Mummy and Daddy.

Grade: E

Mansaram: Tried his hardest in what was a promising debut. Came close to scoring near the end with a flicked header - his first touch wasn't great but showed plenty of pace and determination.

Grade: C-

Rowan: Came on to play in an unusual right wing position for the injured Cooke. Did brighten Town up and won a few free kicks. Does look stronger than last season and is probably one of Town's best bets to end goal drought. Still, he couldn't manage to create an opening.

Grade: C

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
