Santos Puts Club Before Country

By: Tony Hamilton

GRIMSBY Town's Cape Verde international Georges Santos has turned down the chance to play international football in the hope he can secure a long-term deal with the Mariners. Georges has put club before country in his quest for another contract with a Division One side.

Santos played for his country against Mauritania having qualified through his family heritage. Wanting to get a long term deal after initially putting pen to paper on a monthly contract with Grimsby, he has elected to pull out of the Cape Verde Islands' next qualifying game in the hope he can impress sufficiently at Blundell Park to earn a longer contract.

Commenting on his latest club the former Blade told the BBC: "Sheffield is a big club, they played in the Premiership seven years ago, but for football I prefer Grimsby. We play on the pitch, not kick and run all the time."
