Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Harry's Chin Wag - Week 3

Date: 27/10/2002

WHEN are thing going to change at our beloved Blundell Park? Another mauling away from home and things are back to normal now: BLEAK!!

Santos' reputation is another talking point, as he made a vital misjudgment at the wrong time and now his future is very doubtful, with Town looking to give him a "pay-as-you-play" option on his new contract.

Kabba's move is up in arms as well due to the politics at the Palace, and it's all coming at the wrong time for Town as they're making second from bottom all their own now.

Other teams around them have their managers quaking in there boots with the dole queue staring them selves in the face, but our manager is saved from this for a while. But how long can we carry on like this?.

The Premier League have handed all the solvent Football League clubs a life line by giving them a £800,000 bail out to alleviate the ITV Digital fiasco, with clubs like Leicester and Barnsley missing out with being in administration. Why can't the Football League regulate more to stop clubs being pulled into the abyss of administration?

Also being suggested is a salary cap to stop clubs spending money they haven't got on players wages. This happens in Rugby League which as far as I know is working well and stopping clubs over-spending on salaries.

Another talking point among supporters is setting up a Supporters Trust - a good idea but will it have the bite that the organizers hope? What people have pointed out to me is that the way the organizers are going about things is a bit weird. Instead of private discussions they decided to use a message board to rant and rave about the current share position at Blundell Park.

They think they're going to do this and do that, but as the Club have stated on this front the only things through the trust that'll interest them is helping GTFC out on the money side of things. So a plea to the Supporters Trust organizers: if you want things to work be realistic as the position at every club is different, so view things from a realistic position, then the Club might take you seriously in these matters.
