Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Subbuteo Or The Real Thing?

By: Roger Swindells
Date: 10/03/2003

45 years experience (or should it be torture?) has taught me that Town's relegations often come in twos and if we are relegated in consecutive seasons this time, we simply are never going to get back, in fact all the way to the Conference is really not out of the question.

Relegation this season is inevitable and frankly long overdue, the team and management is quite simply not up to Div 1 standard and if the truth be known we have been performing one division above our abilities for years but the rot has to be stopped NOW and plans have to be made for bouncing straight back next season or worse could follow.

".…we can stay up if everyone else loses every match!…."

We have to accept we are still run by a bunch of "small town big fish in a small pond" type local businessmen, the like of which ran most lower division clubs years ago, who are good at keeping us afloat (or only semi-submerged) and no more. There is little prospect of ridding ourselves of them in exchange for anyone with real money and a meaningful desire to succeed. We therefore have to exist and scrape along as usual. But we can't leave it until next Christmas when we are a disappointing mid-table team (look at it - Div 2. It is no easy league)

We are alleged to be unable to offer anyone a contract before we know whether we are down or not - but its as good as sealed already (it won't be long before the maths tell us we can stay up if everyone else loses every match and we win them all 10-0) so lets start building for next season now.

Bring in the youngsters, they're cheap and they're keen and they will have to play anyway, once the overpaid posers have turned us down and the 'over the hill' donkeys have been allowed to leave, but above all let's get someone in to help Groves - the man would have difficulty devising a tactical plan for a game of Subbuteo.

The new stadium? Forget it! If the plunge is not halted soon and we don't bounce straight back, Bradley pitches or the King George stadium will be plenty big enough.
