Boulding Avoids the Knife

By: Paul Holmes
Date: 17/03/2003

GRIMSBY manager Paul Groves received some good news on Friday after he was told that striker Michael Boulding will not require an operation.

The pacy frontman has struggled with an ankle injury over the last 6 months having picked up the knock during a loan spell with Sheffield United. The injury delayed a move back to Blundell Park for around a month.

After seeing a specialist the former Mansfield man was told he would need an operation, not satisfied Boulding sought a second opinion in Oxford, from the specialist he saw during his Villa spell.

This time the news was better, the second specialist revealed an operation was not necessary. Boulding will need an injection into his ankle ligaments this week and his shoes will have to be fitted with inserts to cure the problem.

Boulding will hopefully begin training some time this week. News that delighted manger Paul Groves.

"Michael has been to see three or four specialists over the course of time but wanted to see the man in Oxford who dealt with him when he was at Villa," Groves told the Sports Telegraph.

"One specialist had told him he needed an operation, but yesterday he was told that he doesn’t. His problem is that his ankles are tilted and wearing away the cartilage and bruising the bone."

Despite the urge, Groves insists Boulding won’t be rushed back into first team action.

"Before we start talking about targets and games we need to get him sorted out and see that he comes through pain-free," Groves added.

"That’s the first hurdle, then we can start setting his targets."
