A fan's view of former Grimsby Town player David Smith, who looks back at his time at Blundelll Park and how he was perceived by the fans during that time.

Fans Piece
David Smith was a steady and uncomplicated player. He made a bright start to his Town career when he scored on his debut and went on to play twice at Wembley.

Smith showed his versatility by playing at both left back and left midfield. He scored some spectacular goals while at Blundell Park, with his left foot and also with his right.

There was the last game of the league season against Oldham when he hit the post twice, beating the dancing Bruce Grobelaar in goal. The next season he fluked a goal against one of his former clubs, Birmingham City, and then fluked another one down at QPR.

He did score some normal goals from open play as well. The one that springs to mind came in one of Smith's best games for the club. Town were hosting Playoff contenders Watford and Smith's fantastic strike from 25 yards out opened the scoring. Davison made a couple of great saves at the other end before Watford finally drew level. Groves nicked the win in the very last minute when he shinned home a Daryl Clare flick-on but it was Smith who impressed the most.

It was a rare occasion when Grimsby were clearly second best and still won, but one man stood out.

Smith appeared two-footed and didn't have many bad games. I would best describe him as steady. A steady performer and a steady professional and a good acquisition for Town considering he was already in his thirties when he signed.
