Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Bring Back Buckley!

By: Papa-G
Date: 04/01/2004

I have to agree with many of the fans who are ready to call time on Paul Groves' tenure as manager of Grimsby Town. Although I am an exile who lives in Nottingham, I was born in Cleethorpes and have followed Town all my life.

I had high expectations for Town this season following a spate of summer signings - some good (Marcel Cas), some bad (Des Hamilton). But at the halfway point of the season I find all my hopes for the season have already been dashed.

A good manager must be able to motivate his players..

The reason? A lack of guile, vision, and above all managerial experience. A good manager must be able to motivate his players, and I fear Grovesie can no longer do this. Town's home performances, for the most-part have been inept. Defensively they look shambolic, and up front they seem short of ideas, relying too heavily on the ability of Michael Boulding (he is only one man, albeit great).

Things need to change soon. Town seemed destined to spend another season in Div. 2; if this trend continues we could end up in Div. 3!

Give Grovesie the Plymouth game: no Win, no Job

Give Grovesie the Plymouth game: no Win, no Job, it is as simple as that. If he fails then he needs to go and Graham Rodger needs to follow.

What I say next may seem like heresy, but Alan Buckley has recently been dismissed from his job at Rochdale, maybe it is time we gave him another go - he did wonders last time with a very small squad, and had to build the team up gradually.

Buckley always had a knack of getting his players to play

This time he has what I feel is the basis of a good squad, and Buckley always had a knack of getting his players to play. I know it may seem like a step backwards, but who else will come to Town? We have always been regarded as a Third World club and so cannot attract big name players/managers.

I think given the chance, Buckley could get Town out of what is essentially a poor Second Division, and back into the First Division where we belong. Some Town fans may feel I'm wrong, and my choice of potential successor to Grovesie is misguided! Ok, so suggest another candidate who would be willing to come to Town.

Whatever happens I will always follow Town, and will be there on Saturday for the Plymouth game.
