Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Sack The Board? Are You Crazy?

By: Bill Osborne

IT is quite obvious that the message has not yet got through to those people who continually call for the board of Grimsby Town FC to resign.

Calling for this board to resign is the same as calling for them to place the club into liquidation. That is, closing down and selling off Blundell Park.

Because the fact is, there is no one ready and willing to step into their shoes. And why should there be? Here is a club hanging on by its teeth financially and looking like dropping into the third division. A club, that is presently without hope, without ideas and without any spare cash.

So how many rich businessmen with any sense at all would want to take it over?

The current board, who have fought gallantly, in my opinion, to keep this club afloat have issued an open invitation to anyone who is prepared to put money into the club to join the board.

So far there have been no takers.

That surely is an indication of what would happen if Fenty & Co were to walk away from the club.

Let me say immediately that this board is not perfect and have, in my view, made many mistakes. But one cannot fault them for either their commitment or their financial input.

We do not have multi millionaires sitting on the board with an open cheque book. They are local business people who care about the club and who have, in some cases, stretched themselves to the limit to make money available. And for that we should be showing our appreciation.

This club has enough problems without people calling for the board to stand aside and let others take over the reins.

There is no one!

"Sack the board" is for dreamers. There is no Russian oil magnate looking us over. There is no knight in shining armour and fairy godmothers are totally out of fashion!
