Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Are We Ever Satisfied?

By: Bill Osborne

THE Grimsby Telegraph has published a letter from a reader today complaining about the lack of information from the club and the standard of play.

Home > Editorials > Are We Ever Satisfied?

He said; "Isn't it about time the board of directors told Grimsby fans the exact position the club is in? If the club is millions of pounds in debt, then why don't the board simply tell the fans. That way we could maybe understand the crazy wheelings and dealings that have happened all season long."

"It appears to me that the sad fact of the matter is that Grimsby cannot afford to pay the wages of second division standard players and as such we keep adopting players from across the continent, who, quite frankly would not break into most Sunday league teams."

I think we are all concerned about our current position but to be fair to the club, there has been no shortage of information regarding the financial situation.

There are approximately 2 million of long term debts I think the chairman said. The gate income is not sufficient to pay our way and the directors are making up the shortfall. You would have to be living in Antarctica, or perhaps Barnsley, not to know that.

Now how much information do people want? The problem is that either people do not listen to the club when they make statements or they choose to ignore them.

As for the playing situation, I cannot see how much more they can do than what they are doing now in the present financial situation.

The new manager is doing what he can and so far, he has not produced flowing football by all accounts, but it is early days yet, he has however put some life back into a team that was dying on its feet. (Maybe a bit too late for two in particular who seem to be in zombie land)

I do think that right at this time, we should be attempting to be a little more confident and start casting aside the negativity that has prevailed throughout this season. Don't say it is not easy, I already know that. But we are in a lot better position now than we have been for a very long time.

That's my rant for the day! (please form a queue on the message board to disagree with me)
