The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

A Younger Perspective

WE welcome articles and feedback to the Fishy and today it is good to see that our younger subscribers are prepared to have their say. Claire Streeter and Stuart Cox give us their views on the situation past and present at Blundell Park.

Claire Streeter is obviously a Phil Jevons fan and, quite rightly, wants to express her view.

I think Phil Jevons was great because he never failed to deliver great balls into the box, he scored some fantastic goals. He made me feel proud to be a town fan as he scored 13 goals for us last season, including scoring a stunning 4 goals in the match against Barnsley

I think he is a great player and its such a shame we won't see him wearing the black and white stripes next season. He also did some fantastic passes, tackles and won 9 trophies at the presentation evening which was fully deserved and he got them for all the goals effort etc. he had put into playing for Grimsby last season.

I hope one day he will return to the mariners to show everyone what he can really do, and show us what we mean to him, by playing once again in the black and white stripes scoring vital goals for the one and only Mariners

Stuart Cox looks back at the last couple of seasons or two saying;

Looking back at the last few seasons. Grimsby haven't really appealed to any juniors. With 2 relegations and all in all 20 wins! We have had some decent players though in a town shirt playing well but we still finished up relegated

Steve Kabba a great loan signing from Crystal Palace. He moved on to Sheffield United and has made an impact. Also other good players who have left us. Alan Pouton moved to Gillingham for a mere £30,000 when we could of got a lot more. He was a Grimsby man, loved the club, and was rewarded by a move behind his back.

Marcel Cas, we only had him for 6 months. He had great stamina, great pace. But he was always on the bench and everyone had to admit a bit of an attitude problem. Michael Boulding - everyone thought highly of him. He did good, scoring 12 goals in the division 2 campaign. And the scary thing is in the build up to the 2004/2005 seasons we have had some of our targets and "key men" signing for other League 2 clubs

Phil Jevons has opted for Yeovil, Stuart Campbell has been linked with a move to Bristol Rovers, Mike Edwards has signed for Notts County. So the players must know there is something wrong. At the end of the division 1 season we saw players like Danny Coyne, Georges Santos leave to move on to "bigger" clubs Leicester and Ipswich but Danny Coyne hardly played and Santos was nearly transferred to Watford in January 2004.

We also ended up with 2 loan signing towards the end of the 2002/2003 season. Michael Keane and Richard Hughes played well but 2 out of 11 consistent good players won't win you anything. Steve Chettle tried to experience the back line, had a good season but the defence leaked goals and as it did last season.

Was Chettle right to leave Grimsby for Burton Albion?? Would it of been better for Coyne, Santos and Chettle to stay here not mentioning Keane's recent move to Hull. If Grimsby offered him a contract would he have chosen us?

This is a junior's perspective on life at Grimsby town. I am also asking questions about managers.

Paul Groves. Was he right to move into management?? He would of made a good manager but not just yet, another few years maybe.

Graham Rodger: 3 wins out of 6. Our best managerial track record for last season. But why appoint Nicky Law he already made Bradford virtually relegated so a wrong move there and finally Russel Slade. We will have to wait and see what happens.

He sounds up for the job and willing to aim to take this club in the right direction and with 2 sounding very good players in Ramsden and Whittle signing who knows the 2004-2005 season maybe our season!
