Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

TIM Harlow one of our young subscribers recounts here one of the memorable games he has seen at BP. Tim says; Welcome to my new venture. I am looking to set up past matches and posting what I can recall on here. The first match I will look at is Grimsby v Oldham, which occurred on Boxing Day 2003.

I remember as I walked into a 3/4s full Blundell Park on a bitter crisp afternoon with the temperature just above freezing the players warming up.

The Referee kicked the match off and Grimsby set the pace with Michael Boulding running riot and trying to break the Oldham defence. Oldham had a few attempts at goal before JEVONS picked up the ball on the left and chipped the ball over POGLIACOMI to make the score one nil to Grimsby.

Calvin Zola made some dangerous runs as did Jermaine Johnson and after 15 minutes CRANE wrongly got red carded after 16 minutes for a little trip on JOHNSON.

Oldham equalised through JOHNSON and just after half an hour went 2-1 ahead through Ernie COOKSEY. Half time blew with the town fans a little bit bemused by the 45 minutes of football they had just seen.

The Second half began and they started full of life with Boulding having various chances and finally slotting home after 57 minutes with the score line 2-2 and with town playing well, the Town faithful believed we could win it. But in the 73rd Minute all went quiet again as Oldham found the net for a third time through Scott VERNON after a neat little bit of play.

But finally town got the just rewards again as BOULDING rounded off a cool move with a neat finish to make the Score 3-3. Town played out the final minutes with great composure and flair and getting their hard fought point at the end of the game.

But we can't forget Oldham did have 2 goals disallowed and they hit the bar as well, so we were lucky. But the main turning point was CRANE'S sending off.
