Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Town 1 Cheltenham 1

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/10/2004

POOR finishing and good goalkeeping cost the Mariners two points at home to Cheltenham on Friday night. Town missed an early penalty yet again, went 1-0 up through Andy Parkinson, and for the most part were in control of the game, only to concede a late equaliser.

Town reverted back to the side which won at Cambridge, with the exception of Thomas Pinault returning in midfield in place of Stacy Coldicott after his recent groin problems.

The Mariners looked to have got off to a perfect start after just 2 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Jason Crowe. Up stepped Frenchman Pinault to take it, only to hit the ball wide of the left post.

Town took the lead on 15 minutes when Andy Parkinson scored a brilliant right foot volley.

Cheltenham were mainly restricted to shots from distance and free kicks.

In the second half weather conditions took a turn for the worse, and only wayward finishing and good goalkeeping stopped Town from extending their lead. Flemming, Reddy, Sestanovich and Gordon all had shots saved by Higgs in the Robins' goal.

In the 85th minute substitute Spencer scored with Cheltenham's first shot on target. The Robins could have gone on and won the game in the dying minutes, but Town hung on for a point and at least extend their unbeaten run in the League to 3 games.

A full report will appear tomorrow.
