Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Why I Quit - Gordon

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 28/12/2004

GRIMSBY Town defender, Dean Gordon, in an interview with the Grimsby Telegraph gave his reasons for quitting Blundell Park and seeking a place elsewhere. He said disappointment of being dropped for the Boxing Day clash with Macclesfield made his mind up to leave the club.

He said that he had become unhappy in recent weeks and thought long and hard before taking the decision to quit.

"I think I have had a decent enough season and up until a couple of weeks ago I was enjoying my football here. There were a few things outside of football that were bothering me in the last two weeks and when I found out I was dropped for the Macclesfield game I was upset, like any player would be."

"I spoke with the gaffer before the game and continued to think about my decision even on the way home from the ground afterwards - even though I had my letter with me saying I wanted to leave. Then I heard from a friend that there was speculation on the radio that I may be released anyway and that made my mind up."

Gordon thanked Russell Slade for giving him a chance. "I have to thank Russell Slade for giving me the opportunity to play football again because I didn't have a club in the summer and didn't feel I had been that fit last year."

"I had nothing lined up beforehand and that's not why I am leaving."

Earlier in the day Slade refused to comment on speculation that other players would be leaving, Hockless and Crane in particular.

But Slade told the Grimsby Telegraph; "People like to bandy names about and speculate about the future of players who aren't getting a game, but that's part and parcel of football. I am just concerned with picking a team for the game at Lincoln at the moment - that's my main priority."
