African Defender on Trial

THE Mariners have handed a trial to Gambian defender Hassan Nyang, who has just been released by a club in Senegal.

With Simon Ramsden and Justin Whittle both currently injured, Russell Slade has invited the big defender to spend a few days with Grimsby, although it would be a surprise if Town signed the African.

He joins fellow trialist Jermaine Palmer, a striker from Stoke City, who impressed in the midweek reserve defeat to Man Utd. Town's last African defender Georges Santos ended up winning player of the season two years ago, despite only arriving at the club half way through the campaign.

"It's not really a gamble as it doesn't cost anything to have a look at these players and you never know who you'll come across," Slade told Mariners Net.

After receiving the nod from the board for another season at Blundell Park, the former Scarborough boss will have one eye on the squad for next season.
