Richard Hughes 2002/0312 (0)1 goal

Richard Hughes

Richard Hughes was brought in on loan from Portsmouth towards the conclusion of the 2002/3 season by manager Paul Groves. His arrival coincided with an upturn in form for the Mariners, but his contributions couldn't save Grimsby from relegation into Division Two.

Hughes had played against Town earlier the same season and caught Groves' eye. His left foot was useful from set pieces but he didn't look comfortable playing out on the left wing, away from his more accustomed central midfield role.

Hughes scored his only Mariners' goal on his final appearance in the 2-2 home draw with Brighton. There was hope that he could have been signed permanently that summer as it appeared he was surplus to requirements at Pompey. However, he stayed on the south coast and fought his way back into the side - and made headlines in the FA Cup a few seasons back when he scored the winning goal to knock Liverpool out of the competition.
