Football Betting: Week One

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/07/2005

WELCOME to a new weekly column looking at Football betting in general, with particular emphasis on Grimsby's games and the League Two scene.

Home > 2005-2006 Season > Beat the Bookies > Week 1

Each week I select a "recommended" bet, on which I will personally place a tenner!

I don't claim to be a very successful gambler (in fact my past record suggests just the opposite!). The main aim of this column is to give me the opportunity to put my money where my mouth is, and to have some fun at the same time! And - in football manager vernacular - any money won (or even not lost) will be a bonus.

With zero games on the board, this week I turn my attention to the bottom of the table. Last year Rushden and Diamonds were lucky to stay in the Football League, and narrowly avoided a second successive relegation to the Conference. After being taken over by their own Supporters' Trust in the summer, following years of being bankrolled by former Chairman Max Griggs, Rushden's days in the Football League are - in my opinion - numbered!

Although Griggs has agreed to give the club a further £750K over the next two years, Nene Park always had the feel of a rich boy's toy, being situated on the outskirts of the sleepy village of Irthlingborough, deep in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside. Not exactly the natural home of a league football team.

With their sugar daddy out of the equation, take the opportunity to back Diamonds to take the initial step back into non-league obscurity at the first time of asking!
