Gary Croft On Trial With Town

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 02/08/2005

FORMER Mariner Gary Croft has now left Cardiff City and been invited by Town to come for a trial. He will play in tonight's pre-season friendly against Blackburn Rovers.

He was due to play for Cardiff's reserves at Haverford West last night, but withdrew because of a problem over insurance as he is out of contract at Ninian Park.

Although he has been training with the Bluebirds, he has been looking for another club.

"Grimsby invited me up for a trial and I have accepted,' said Croft.

"Cardiff City could not guarantee anything long-term. I need first team football and will look for opportunities elsewhere."

Russell Slade in the Grimsby Telegraph said: "Gary is available after his release from Cardiff and it makes sense for us to see what he has got to offer."

"He has suffered a serious injury but has got a lot of pedigree and could be an asset if he proves he is over that."

"Tom Newey turned his ankle at Lincoln which leaves us short so we've brought Gary in to fill that role."

"But he can play in a number of positions and could be a good utility man for us."

"There's also the fact that he has been here before and knows all about the club."
