Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Kick and Rush?
Kick and Rush?

Slade and the Future

By: Steve Johnson
Date: 18/02/2006

LAST season I wrote to express my worries about two issues. Firstly the lack of opportunities for young players who come through the youth system, and secondly the reliance on the long ball rather than keeping it on the ground.

Like the recent contributor I live in Nottinghamshire and tend to go to more away games. On Tuesday two bad goals were given away; this happens but should not hide the fact that it was a very poor performance against a poor team. I would question the team selection and the use of substitutes.

The three subs brought on, far too late, were probably the three best passers in the side and highlighted the reliance of the aimless long ball. Why did some of them not play from the start?

Squads do need to be large but the practice of loan signings going straight into the side does not send a very positive message to young players. What does Mendes offer over other young forwards who could benefit from playing with Reddy and Jones?

My friend, a Mansfield supporter summed it up when he said I see Russell Slade still plays the kick and rush. The manager deserves a lot of credit in getting the team near the top but I feel he needs to change things to get into League One and progress.
