The Fans Views

JOHN Baxter, in expressing his views on the current situation at Blundell Park, has prompted a couple of readers to post their own views. As always, the Fishy are happy to print articles submitted by Town fans.

Rik Bushell starts by replying to John Baxter and adds a few comments of his own:

Oy, Baxter, No!

Having just read the recent article by John Baxter I feel the need to reply immediately.

I too have been one of the many pessimists bemoaning what has gone on at Blundell Park recently but I do feel that Mr. Baxter's words were a tad strong. I wasn't happy about Rodger's appointment but immediately chose to back him. I also wasn't happy about the time it took to appoint an assistant and the lack of transfer activity but to say we would be better off in administration is completely barmy! We would face a ten point deduction, be forced to sell off all of our assets and then I'm afraid we certainly would be Conference bound! How long would it then take for us to recover from that (if ever)?

Let's face the facts and that is that Town still owe a massive debt to the Inland Revenue. I'm sure the interest being charged on such a debt doesn't make pleasant reading so maybe it would be good business practice to pay off as much of it as we can. Anyway without John Fenty, I'm sure we would have been a lot closer to extinction, didn't he just put over a hundred grand of his own hard-earned money in to appease the taxman? That is probably more then every other Town fan put together!

I have ranted and raved over the message boards about how thin our squad is but I really don't think it's as bad as you make out, Mr. Baxter. Perhaps Rodger wants to sign the right type of player instead of wasting wages on tosh. If he can't get the standard he wants straight away then maybe a couple of higher calibre player's in on loan could help.

Mariners-Chriz also has his say on the current team:

Strength in Depth!

Now then my fellow mariners, I don't want to create a stir like a previous article which will remain nameless, I just want to state my worry about the depth of our beloved team.

I believe that we have the potential for one of the best starting 11's in the league but after that our numbers are limited in a number of positions, I believe that a few of our youth players are good enough for the starting 11. For example Pete Bore, Danny North, Ben Higgins and Miles Chamberlain but these players lack one vital thing, experience, but as one man once said 'you'll never win anything with kids' now what good was that. If you look at the team without the youth players then we lack back up in the following positions

Goalkeeper
Centre Back
Another centre back
Left midfield
Right midfield
Centre forward
Another Centre forward

That is worrying isn't it? Now there are two things that could be done to solve this problem.

  • Give the youth players regular first team games to increase their experience.
  • Bring in numerous back up players that will increase competition within the team.

Well I'm glad I got that off my chest

It is important to have strength in depth, be it new players or experienced youth players. So then my fellow Mariners let them throw anything at us but I say bring it on!!!
