Beat the Bookies: Week 3

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/08/2006

LAST week's recommended bet of Boston to beat Grimsby looked a formality at one stage, until the entrance of Peter Bore upon the pitch, and the rest was history.

This weekend the Mariners travel to Bristol Rovers, who have lost both their games so far. That said, they've played two decent teams in Wycombe and Peterborough and are still expected to do well this season. Consequently bet365.com make Rovers favourites to beat Grimsby, at a backable 13/10. Town, who have not convinced for most of the season, and only ranked 7/4 for an away win, which is hard to make a case for.

Also of interest, especially at this stage of the season (as the bookies don't know who is likely to score), is the first goal scorer's market. On bet365.com the point is illustrated by the fact that Terry Barwick is favourite to score the first goal! This inaccuracy has skewed the market amd means that Reddy, Jones, Agogo and Walker are all on 6/1 - pick whichever takes your fancy. Peter Beagrie is 14/1 and Justin Whittle rank outsider at 66/1.

Elsewhere in the division Darlington should win at Boston (6/4 with bet365.com). Wycombe are not expected to do as well this season, but they still have most of their best players and should win at Notts County (13/8 with bet365.com).

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Bristol R to beat Grimsby (13/8 with bet365.com).
  • 2. Darlington to beat Boston (6/4 with bet365.com).
