Humbled by Crewe

By: Rob Salt
Date: 23/08/2006

HOPES of another Spurs or Newcastle United at home in the cup were ended tonight by Crewe at Blundell Park. Town never really got started against a poor Crewe team.

Town lined up for the first cup match of the season with Ben Futcher coming in for Martin McIntosh who was not allowed to play by his club Huddersfield Town. The rest of the line-up was the same eleven that started against Mansfield on Friday night.

Town began brightly with Rankin and Bore looking lively; it looked to the fans that Town seemed as though they were going to be up for this match.

However it was Crewe who had the ball in the back of the net first but their effort was quite rightly disallowed for an offside. Town continued to push forward but never really tested the Crewe keeper Stuart Tomlinson. However Crewe were coming back into the game with their danger men of Ryan Lowe and Nicky Maynard, who were very quick and giving the Town defenders some trouble.

Both teams seem to settle down and with little being created by either team the match was becoming like a boring pre-season friendly. However the game got just what it needed, a goal, sadly for the Town fans it was in the Town net. A ball through the centre of defence found Maynard running on to it, and with the Town defenders trying to play catch-up and the Town 'keeper racing off his line, Maynard slotted it low, hard and easily into the Town net.

Not the best of times to concede a goal, just before half time. Surely Rodger would give his team a talking to and get them geared up for the second half?

Second half Town came out and may well have gone back in again. Crewe found it far too easy without breaking into a sweat. Nothing from the team at all, no passion and no pride. I had memories of Cardiff from last season.

It was no surprise when Crewe got their second, a well worked move down the left, a cross field pass and up pops O'Connor with a very good finish in the top corner, good goal but far too easy.

Wantaway striker Michael Reddy came on for the again ineffective Jones, and managed to at least get their 'keeper to make a save, but apart from a couple of set pieces which went wide or high, Town were awful.

This was summed in the final minutes when a Crewe player broke away and into the box only for Newey to bring him down inside the area, a penalty that was taken well by Lowe.

This match, attended by a measly 1635, was as bad as it sounded, I for one am very concerned where our team is going. On this current performance mid-table is the best we can hope for and if offered that now I would take it.

Man of the Match: Nobody deserves this honour.
