Beat the Bookies: Week 20

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/12/2006

WREXHAM'S win over Scunthorpe last week in the FA Cup saw Beat the Bookies go back into profit for the season overall. Long may it continue!

Grimsby are favourites to beat Shrewsbury this weekend, although the Shrews are no longer the pushover they have been in seasons gone by and they have one or two decent players in their squad. However, Shrewsbury have only won 1 league game out of 6, and Grimsby should hopefully win their third game on the trot and advance further up the table. You can get odds of 11/10 for a Town win, or 16/5 for Town to win by two or more goals.

Elsewhere in League Two you can get decent prices for a couple of upsets. Macclesfield are starting to improve under Paul Ince and won their first league game this week. They have also got into the 3rd round of the FA Cup, drawn their last three away league games, and are priced 9/2 with Betfred to overcome Notts County away, whose recent form is not brilliant. County also have a habit of losing at home to lowly opposition, usually 0-1.

Slightly longer odds are available for Barnet to win at Wycombe. Barnet looked a much better side than their league placing on Tuesday night, and in fact had won 4 out of the last 5 games going into the match with Town. This weekend, Barnet are ranked 4/1 to win at Wycombe, whose form has dipped in recent weeks.

Finally, Town's odds of promotion drops with every game, and their price for relegation lengthens. Grimsby are now 20/1 with Corals to go up. If you fancy them to do generally well over the next few games, one idea is to bet on them now and then lay them at a shorter price on one of the betting exchanges - then you cannot lose whatever happens.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Grimsby to beat Shrewsbury (11/10).
  • 2. Macclesfield to beat Notts County (9/2).
