Beat the Bookies: Week 25

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 17/01/2007

WALSALL won both halves on Monday, ensuring that Beat the Bookies saw a profit for the week, even if it was at the expense of another woeful Grimsby performance.

This weekend Grimsby take on Darlington at the currently rare time of 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. After several weeks of taking on in-form sides, for once Town face a side with an almost equally bad recent record to themselves. The bad news however is that Darlo are on of our bogie sides. The bookies even make Town favourites with bet365.com offering 11/8 for a Grimsby win and 17/10 for Darlo.

My advice is to steer well clear of this game as there are several much more tempting matches around League Two, with a handful of matches seeing teams offered at long odds for away wins, many of whom have fairly decent form.

Firstly, Shrewsbury v Rochdale. Rochdale have won this fixture for the last two years, and their recent form is pretty good, with the exception of last week's 1-0 defeat at home to Bristol R. Rochdale are 3/1 to win.

Then there is Notts Co v Torquay. Torquay's recent form has been awful, but County's is pretty bad as well. They have in fact lost their last four home games. Teams at the bottom always seem to start improving around this stage of the season, and Torquay could well come away from Meadow Lane with three points. The Gulls are 7/2 to win.

Peterborough have lost six games on the spin, but are still strong favourites to beat Stockport at home! County have lost their last three on their travels, but their recent home form is good. Keith Alexander has been sacked this week but 11/5 for a Stockport win still looks good odds.

Bristol R are playing well at home, but Chester unbelievably have won five games on the trot on their travels! For that reason alone 12/5 for an away win has to be considered.

Finally two form horses face each other in the form of MK Dons v Barnet. The Bees are flying at the moment with 15 points from 6 games, and 15/4 again has to be good value.

So there you are! There are five great away win bets in League Two this week. I wouldn't be surprised if several of them come in, and it may well pay to back all 5. Or you could even bet on a 5-fold accumulator for odds of 929/1! Unfortunately my system allows for just two single bets, so these are they.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Stockport to win at Peterborough (11/5).
  • 2. Torquay to beat Notts Co (7/2).
