Bonetti Dundee Manager

Bonetti Named Dundee Manager

News From 9th May 2000

Ivano with Bill Carr

Dundee have appointed former Town hero Ivano Bonetti and his brother Dario as their new management team at Dens Park.

The pair have recently been in charge at of amateur side Italian Serie C2's Sestrese (the Italian equivalent of our third division)

Ivano will be head coach at Dens Park. He is well known at Grimsby as the player to have his cheekbone broken by former Grimsby manager Brian Laws following a 'Sandwich throwing' incident in 1996 at Luton.

A third coaching appointment will go to another Italian, Dario Magri..

Although he only played a few games for Grimsby, Bonetti rapidly became a cult hero during an incredible period when Grimsby rose to second in the first Division, before it all went horribly wrong.

Bonetti reportedly paid £50,000 of his own transfer fee to come to Grimsby, and all seemed to be going well until the incident at Luton.

Since then he has never appeared to have settled down and at one time a "consortium" with him at the helm made an offer to take over Grimsby Town. He was also linked with Grimsby's rivals Hull City at one time. Not much came of either offer and eventually he has secured what appears to be a long-time aim to get his foot in the door at a British football club with this appointment at Dundee.
