Town's Unbeaten Run Ends With Loss To Huddersfield

By: Richard Lord
Date: 04/08/2001

GRIMSBY's undefeated pre-season run came to an end tonight in a 2-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town. A goal in each half settled the game, with the Mariners looking a far distant team from the one which sunk The Iron on Wednesday night.

Danny Butterfield was the man to partner Paul Groves in central defence, with Menno Willems left on the bench. Coldicott and Burnett started in midfield with Pouton and Campbell on the wings. Jevons was coupled with Allen up front and Coyne was back in goal.

Town failed to create any clear-cut chances throughout the whole 90 minutes, and it was a big disappointment for the on-looking 2,500 fans who had hoped to have seen a continuation of form from the 4-1 win at Glanford Park.

Huddersfield opened the scoring after 10 minutes when a ball played down the right was run on to and slotted past Coyne in goal. The second came half way through the second half when David Smith tried to head the ball away from danger, but only presented it to Booth who slotted the ball home with Coyne left stranded.

It was a bitterly disappointing performance from the Mariners who would have been looking to make the division gap between the two sides evident. Town's moves often fell apart with little excitement to get the crowd going. John McDermott even attempted a shot from 30 yards in the first half but it was delt well by the Terriers' keeper who didn't have a lot to do.

Jevons often showed the close control and neat touches more associated with the Premiership, but lacked the final pass or the extra yard to get on the end of crosses. Allen was replaced by Jeffrey at half time, and it had an immediate effect on the team. Willems went into defence, with Butterfield pushed up into midfield and the team looked more settled.

Overall it was a poor performance with only a few players looking anywhere near their best. Jeffrey continued from where he left off at Scunthorpe. Pouton, although quieter, still showed the form fans have got used to, and Groves was again reliable in defence. McDermott looked tidy on his return and Campbell looked, at times, menacing down both flanks.

Coldicott, Burnett and Jevons looked as though they weren't at their best, and Allen was a big disappointment in the first half. Rowan added some enthusiasm near the end, and brought out a great save from the Huddersfield keeper.
