Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Beat the Bookies: Week 14

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 15/11/2007

IT'S actually been a good week for the Mariners, which makes that tenner lost last week on Carlisle beating them by two goals pale into insignificance.

Home > 2007-2008 Season > Beat the Bookies > Week 14

After two decent cup results for the Mariners it is now make or break time in the Football League. The consecutive matches against top opposition or well supported clubs have ended and it's time to face one of the smaller teams in League Two, Morecambe. Town simply have to win this match to demonstrate that they have begun to turn the corner. Failure to do so would really set the alarm bells ringing, especially with the next two fixtures being against in-form Barnet and Darlington.

The importance of the game and the improved performance recently in the cups should give the Town players and fans a big lift in Saturday's game and I'd expect Grimsby to go on to win (13/10), or even to win by 2 or more goals (7/2). Two monkeys they will also want to get off their backs are the lack of a clean sheet (13/8) and the near absence of goals scored by strikers this season. One bet I don't recommend though is the 25/1 on offer with bet365 for Gary Jones to score a hattrick!

Morecambe at 9/5 cannot be dismissed as they have had a good season to date, especially away from home and in the cups, but their league form has dipped of late.

Elsewhere in League Two there are a lot of tight fixtures this weekend. Barnet travel to Shrewsbury who have nosedived after a good start and the Shrews have just won one in the last 10 games. Barnet can blow hot and cold but are brilliant on their day and the 9/4 on offer for an away win is good value.

Interestingly Town are now 12/1 to win the JPT Trophy, down from 25/1 on Monday night. The Mariners are also 5000/1 to win the FA Cup with Stan James, even less likely than the 350/1 (bet365) you can get from Grimsby to win League Two!

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Grimsby to beat Morecambe (13/10, bet365).
  • 2. Barnet to beat Shrewsbury (9/4, bet365).
