Town Win Lincs Cup

News From 3rd May 2000

Steve Croudson

Town played their penultimate game of the season last night and won their first piece of silverware of the current campaign - the Lincolnshire Senior Cup. This trophy confirms their status as Lincolnshire's top football side.

The game against non-league Lincoln United finished 3-3 after 90 minutes, and keeper Steve Croudson was the hero of the penalty shootout, saving United's first two penalties.

The Lincoln side had shocked the crowd by going to up after just 17 minutes, with goals from James Drinkall and Kev Ward within 2 minutes of one another.

Daryl Clare brought the Mariners back into the game with a tap-in just before half time after good work by Andy Smith

After the break the Mariners took control of the game and Kingsley Black helped to create a string of chances. Black himself finally hammered home the equaliser from a Matthew Bloomer long ball. Town then went on to miss a whole series of chances to wrap up the game before United's Danny Hargreaves scored against the run of play with just 10 minutes to go.

Town responded immediately and scored from the kick-off. Allen's underhit shot squirmed under the body of Lincoln keeper James Morgan.

In the penalty shoot-out Croudson saved the first two Lincoln penalties. Town never missed, and Daryl Clare scored the winning penalty.

Grimsby Town: (4-4-2) Croudson, McDermott, Livingstone (Rowan 82), Bloomer, Chapman, A Smith, Buckley, Launders (Oswin 68), Black, Clare, Allen. Subs not used: Butterwood, Gibson, Ward.

Lincoln United : (3-4-3) Morgan, Ward (Torne 90), Drinkall, Darren Dye, Hammond, Gilbert, Fleming, Baily, Bird, Dean Dye, Hargreaves. Subs not used: Minta, Baker, Porter, Martin.
