Black Shuns China Move

News From 21st May 2000

Kingsley Black

Town winger Kingsley Black has turned down the chance of a potentially lucrative move to Schiandung, the third biggest club in the emerging Chinese league.

Black has declined an offer from Schiandung to join them in their current campaign near the top of the Chinese league, despite a big cash incentive for an initially short-term contract, with options to extend it later on.

A delegation from China attended Town's last home game of the season against Tranmere and spoke to Black after the game. They even offered to fly Black and his family to Hong Kong on a taster trip before asking him to commit himself to them. But Black turned them down and is now on holiday with his family

The overture was instigated through Grimsby-based football agent Steven Firth and his business partner, former football player & manager Gerry Armstrong. The pair recently helped find Ossie Ardiles a new management post in Japan after his sacking from Croatia Zagreb earlier this season.

The Chinese delegation are continuing to looking for players from the UK, and elsewhere in Europe, to supplement their home-grown talent. They are not deterred by their inability to attract Black and are continuing to search for British and European players, with plenty of time remaining as the Chinese season does not end until October.

Black had been told by Alan Buckley to explore his options elsewhere and to keep him posted of any developments. He will now presumably pick up his search for a new club on his return from a month in the sun.
