"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

sunday 7th january

Alan Smith

From the Daily Telegraph

"It's a hard place to come for a southern team. you can dress well and have all the nice watches in the world but that won't buy a result at Grimsby."
Crystal Palace manager Alan Smith after his side squandered a two-goal lead at Blundell Park.

John Cairns

From Talksport

Listening to John Cairns on Talksport just before Xmas, he was sucking up to yet another Premiership sides' fans, this time Ipswich. They had been harping on about being in the Premiership now after so many years out the top flight, and Cairns mentioned something along the lines about "you're now playing the likes of Arsenal when a few minutes ago you were playing the like of Grimsby".

Spotted by Helen Stuart, who adds "I was stuck in traffic on the A38,and couldn't get to a phone to put him on the spot, he probably wouldn't have even entertained the call had he known the subject."

Mentioned Special

From a Man City site

"In addition, there is the issue of how much investment would be needed to out City back on an even keel. Maine Road, to the south of Manchester's city centre, is dominated by the £11 million Kippax Stand, completed in 1995, and, despite City's troubles, a loyal following of more than 20,000 fans regularly attend less than glamorous league fixtures against the likes of Grimsby Town and Southend United"

From Views From The `Footiemad` Armchair

"Perhaps a new face back then could have salvaged the club, perhaps the stand in manager might still do that, although you do get the feeling that the top dogs are preparing for the drop and playing the likes of Grimsby and Port Vale next season."

From a Watford Site

"Perhaps a new face back then could have salvaged the club, perhaps the The Sky deal for the First Division was hailed as some sort of triumph - in truth, it won't make the slightest bit of difference to the gap between the Premiership and the First Division. It'll possibly balance a few books for the likes of Grimsby but nothing more. It certainly won't help those lower down the divisions to survive."

Alan Smith (yet again!)

"It's about playing the likes of Grimsby, not just the glamour games they see on TV."

From a Man Utd fan

"I never realised how much I'd miss City when they'd gone. How I laughed as we were sampling the cultures of various cities Europe wide and they were getting the train to the likes of Grimsby and Wycombe. The novelty soon wore off though. The diluted, phoney pretend hatred from identikit new football supporters from the likes of Villa and Derby over the last few years has had me yearning for our Moss Side cousins. "

From the official Burnley site

"Supporters clubs would like to revert back to the more flexible system they had for away match allocations, accepting that 5 or 6 games would have to be excluded from that. Clearly demand for away match tickets for most games is not going to be as high as expected. The Club has sent tickets back to Bolton and Wolves even after the general sale period. The 5 or 6 games would be the likes of Grimsby, Preston, BRFC, Stockport, Crewe. Must be on production of vouchers."

From Sky Sports

"Fulham are an enigma. They cannot score goals in the league, but as they have struggled to beat the likes of Grimsby and Crystal Palace they have eased past Luton and Wimbledon with three goal victories.

From Wimbledon official site's match report last premiership game

"After 14 years of upsetting the big boys, the fact is they will next season battle it out with the likes of Grimsby".

From a Blackburn site

"The splendour of Old Trafford, Anfield and Highbury will seem a long way away next season when, week in week out, they play at the likes of Grimsby's Blundell Park"

From a Man Utd site

"While Manchester United march on relentlessly towards another tilt at the championship, the class of '95 that led Blackburn to Premier League glory has been replaced by a team which could have the likes of Grimsby and Bury on their list of destinations come next August."

From a Palace site

"The First Division has some peculiar quirks, which means that if you are to get out of it, you need to know how to get a result at the likes of Grimsby and Stockport as well as beating bigger teams"

From a Sunderland fan

When we get a decent team together I'll think about returning!! Missing some decent beer & all of those freezing cold days watching Sunderland play the likes of Grimsby etc etc!!!!

If you see a "mention" mail them to rob@grimsbyfans.com and we'll put them up here.
