Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Lennie's Not Happy!

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 08/01/2001

Lennie Lawrence has once again been bemoaning Grimsby's defensive inabilities in the aftermath of Saturday's 1-1 FA Cup draw against Wycombe. After taking a one goal lead, Lawrence is concerned that his side seems incapable of keeping a clean sheet.

"It just concerns me that we can't keep that clean sheet away from home, we cannot win 1-0," said the Mariners boss. "The only time we have managed that was at Crystal Palace, and again Danny was in inspired form. Until we do that we cannot move forward." Grimsby must now entertain Wycombe in a replay at Blundell Park - a fixture that Lawrence will not be taking lightly: "People will say 'that's all right, we've got them at home now', but I have been in this situation loads of times and there are always upsets. "They will be running around and battling. The fact that it is a cold Tuesday night won't bother them, it is a big game for them. It is not like you are entertaining a big club and they might not fancy it on the night, they will be up for it, and it is going to be hard." Should the Mariners overcome Wycombe, they will face a 4th round tie at home to Wolves - a prospect that Lawrence is not looking forward to: "It could only be worse if it was Wolves away. You want somebody different, either a team from a lower league who you think you can beat, or a big side."
