Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Foxy Jayne

Date: 17/01/2001

Every so often we interview the long-suffering partner of a keen Town fan. Watching and reading about football can consume a lot of time, which can be a frequent bone of contention between partners. This week's Cod Widow is Foxy Jayne, Steff's "bird".

Fishy:
Tell us a bit about yourself. Foxy Jayne
Foxy Jayne

Jayne:
I am currently the manager of a petrol station, but about to change jobs after the new year. So Steff will have to pay for his own travel costs now, lets see how many home and away games he will see now!!!

Fishy:
Do you support Town yourself, perhaps another club, or do you have no interest in football?

Jayne:
I myself support the greatest footie team in the world Leicester City, I only do this to wind Steff up, boy does it cause some debates in this household. It's great.

Fishy:
Has your partner ever taken you to a game, when, and what do you think of it?

Jayne:
I went to watch GTFC with Steff twice, I found it to be a good day out, not that I did a lot of footie watching cause there was so much talent there I was a little distracted, Mmmm I don't think Steff has quite sussed it yet why I want to go, silly boy he will learn. Oh yes it also smelt, made my nostrils twitch.

Fishy:
How big a part do GTFC play in Steff's life?

Jayne:
GTFC are Steffs life. I think I come a feeble second or even a poor third. I have learnt to live with this and I seem to be able to take advantage of it, I have discovered a lot of new pubs, what's the saying... oh yes while the cat's away!!!

Fishy:
Would you rank Steff's interest in the Mariners as obsessive, fanatical, healthy, moderate, or occasional?

Jayne:
Well this one is tricky how do I answer this one? He has asked for satellite in the loo, does this mean he is all the above?

Fishy:
How often a week do you think Steff thinks of something related to the Mariners?

Jayne:
This ones easy the minute he opens his eyes until the minute he closes them again. (Plus a few times in my sleep)

Fishy:
Who has the deciding vote when there's a football match on TV that clashes with something you want to watch?

Jayne:
Oh that's got to be me I'm great at blackmail (let me watch my program hun and I'll pay for you to see the next home match) it works every time.

Fishy:
What do you do when a Town game is taking place?

Jayne:
Turn off the T.V. And go shopping. I need lots of retail therapy when I'm left alone. Maybe that's why he wants me to go with him to the game.

Fishy:
How often does Steff wear a Town shirt in a typical week?

Jayne:
Only when I've not hidden it well enough.

Fishy:
Does Steff read the newspaper from the front or the back?

Jayne:
Which paper? If the loo roll had footie results and news on he would damn well read it. Back to front.

Fishy:
Is it just Grimsby Town, or does Steff have other sporting teams or individuals they are passionate about?

Jayne:
If the game has a ball, nets, bats, or people dressed in silly outfits Steff would watch it with all the passion his heart could hold.

Fishy:
How long after meeting Steff did he first mention the Mariners?

Jayne:
I'm not sure if it was during the first bonk or straight after. Before that happened he did spend a little time wooing me.

Jayne
