In here is all the stats, info and anything else you need to know about the history between the Mariners and County....

TOWN'S RECORD vs STOCKPORT:-

  • Town have won only 6 of their 54 meetings with County at Edgely Park. - But have won 20 at Blundell Park. Most recently was a 1-0 victory in 1998 when Paul Groves scored for Town.
  • The Mariners highest ever league attendance at Blundell Park was against Stockport in April 1952 with a crowd of 26605. Town ran out 4-0 victors.
  • The last meeting between the two sides was of course less than a month ago, on Boxing day when Town drew 1-1.
  • One of the most exciting games between the two sides in the past 30 years was in 1979, when the promotion-chasing Mariners beat County 2-1 to take them a step closer to Division 3 under the leadership of John Newman. On that day, Bobby Cumming and Tony Ford grabbed the goals with ex Arsenal winger George Armstrong scoring for Stockport.

Down the years there have been many players that have worn the shirts of Grimsby Town and Stockport County, but most prominently were KEITH ALLEN and BILLY HAYDOCK who featured heavily in County's 1966/67 4th Division title triumph. Haydock made 22 appearances for Town, while Allen made only 6 before he moved to County, when he scored 15 goals in 49 appearances.

Before that, in 1930 HORACE FIELDING joined the Mariners from Stockport scoring 12 goals in 69 appearances, until he left for Reading in 1932. In that time, another ex-County player arrived at Blundell Park. NED VINCENT arrived for a fee of £1,200 and went on to play 144 times for Town until retiring in 1946. But more recently ex-Town midfielder MIKE LESTER had a loan spell at Stockport in the 1978/79 season when he played 11 times. He then played for Barnsley, Exeter, Bradford, Scunthorpe and Hartlepool until he rejoined Stockport in 1986 making 13 outings for County. Another ex-Mariner TONY CADWELL helped Stockport reach the fourth division playoffs in the 1989-90 season.

In the 1990/91 season NEIL MATTHEWS netted 15 goals for County and remained there until 1992 when Lincoln City snapped him up for £20,000. He played 11 times under Mike Lyons for the Mariners, but made a further 46 appearances for Stockport. Former Town favourite KEITH ALEXANDER also played for Stockport albeit only 11 times. Alexander made 64 appearances for the Mariners, scoring 29 times. Since then he was in charge at Lincoln City, Mansfield's reserve coach, and manager of Ilkeston, but is now in the hotseat at Conference side Northwich Victoria.
