Willems Will Sign!

By: Richard Lord
Date: 22/02/2001

Grimsby Town's Dutch midfielder Menno Willems is reportedly close to signing a two-and-a-half year contract at Blundell Park. If the transfer is successful, it will be Lennie Lawrence's first signing for the Mariners.

There is more good news filtering through that both Groves and Donovan are close to signing renewed deals at the club, and this follows news of Livingstone's commitment to Grimsby by signing a new deal. The fee for the Vitesse Arnhem midfielder has been agreed at £160,000 and the signing is near completion.

Speaking to the Grimsby Evening Telegraph Willems commented, "I'm very happy here. I like English football and I'm glad Grimsby gave me a chance to play. I think I've done well and I'm glad they're going to take me."

The transfer of the 23-year old was in doubt earlier in the season with wage demands way above what Lawrence could offer. Now the Town boss believes Willems' agent is talking 'sensible figures' and is very close to sealing what would be his first cash signing since taking over from Alan Buckley in the summer.

Speaking of the forthcoming came this Saturday at Forest Willems continued "If we play like we did at Bolton on Saturday I think we are going to win there. We have to put pressure on them and win every tackle and then we can win. We are in the mood for it now."

Of the match at the Reebok Stadium Willems spoke "It was a great game and unfortunately we didn't win. They are a very good side and are number two in the table."

"I'm glad we got the draw and we played very well and I hope we can do it again on Saturday. Everybody said we were going to lose so it was nice to prove them wrong. We are playing better football than before."
