Leeds Striker On Trial

By: Fishy News Room
Date: 01/03/2001

Leeds United forward Lee Matthews has joined Grimsby Town on a week's trial in an attempt to secure a permanent contract at a new club. 22-year-old Matthews, who has also played in midfield, is now effectively a free agent after having been told he could leave this week by the Elland Road side.

Middlesbrough-born Matthews told Radio Humberside "I was told this week at Leeds that I could get a new club if they want me. Basically it's down to me to show that I'm good enough to get a new contract".

Matthews (pictured below) has made just four substitute appearances for the Premiership side, and had a loan spell at Gillingham last season, starting in just two games for the Kent outfit, before returning to Elland Road.

With joint top scorer Bradley Allen just starting his comeback from tendonitis, along with the recent news that a calf problem could rule Steve Livingstone out of action for up to a month, Lennie Lawrence may see Matthews as, at very least, a short-term stopgap for the striking crisis at Blundell Park.

The former England youth player was linked with the Mariners back in January but the deal fell through following a misunderstanding between the two clubs over Matthews' availability.
