Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

"Cockers" on Buckley

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 03/03/2001

In an interview with the Grimsby Telegraph today, John Cockerill, Town's trainer, spoke of his former mentor Alan Buckley. It is clear from the interview that Cockerill had a close working relationship with Buckley and he was one of the first who was told by AB that he had landed the Lincoln job.

Cockerill makes it clear however that Buckley has inherited no bed of roses, and with Lincoln just off point off bottom of the third division, he has only ten weeks to pull them out of trouble. Notwithstanding that, Cockerill is confident that Buckley is the man for the job. "They've got a massive scoop, and anyone in that League would be delighted to have Alan as their manager, whether it was for 10 weeks, or for 10 years," he said.

"They'll have done their homework, and they'll know the importance of getting someone like Alan."

"I think the players are in for a massive shock.

"They'll be very aware of what Alan wants to do and what he expects of them and they'll have to do it his way."

"It might be a case that he has to work with the players he's got but he will get the best out of them." Most Grimsby fans would agree with John Cockerill's opinions. Although Town sacked Buckley, fans still hold him in high regard and many will be keeping their eye on Lincoln's results and performances in the future.
