Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Hux Slams "Apathy"!!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 28/03/2001

BRYAN HUXFORD, Grimsby Town's vice chairman, has slammed missing Mariners fans, accusing them of an apathy which is destroying the club and their plans for the future. Huxford points to average gates this season of 5,319 as a signal that Grimsby does not deserve first division football.

Town's average home crowd places them at the foot of the first division attendance table, adrift from second bottom club Crewe, who average around 1,000 more fans per home game than the Mariners. In contrast nearby Hull City, with crowds of over 7,000 in the last few months, are two divisions lower than Grimsby. Mr Huxford described Grimsby's figures as appalling and blasted away at what he considers to be a lack of interest in the club's fortunes amongst the local population.

"It seems that the people of Grimsby don't want a football club. They certainly aren't supporting it and all our ambitious plans are threatened by the public's apathy." said Huxford. "I've got tremendous enthusiasm but that's not echoed by others in the town and if they want a second or even third division club then they are going the right way about it."

Pointing to the midweek clash two weeks ago against Wimbledon, Town's exasperated Vice Chairman said "We did a special offer of a fiver for a seat at that game and we still didn't get a decent turn-out. I don't know what more we could be expected to do! We did not even pull in five thousand through the gate at Blundell Park and, this season, the crowds are staying away from games."
