Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

LL: Onwards and Upwards!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 23/04/2001

"As far as I'm concerned we're starting the new season now and if we can finish with a flourish you never know," said Town boss, Lennie Lawrence today. "The season will come to an end soon, but we want to keep the momentum going and finish on a high note."

"Look at Sheffield United when Neil Warnock took over. They got up there and surged on." "You must seize the moment and we can't say we'll settle for this. The work starts here."

"We don't want any sense of anti-climax. It's the first time we've won three on the trot and it would be great if it was four." "The message is dead simple: We've done this, and credit to everybody, but I'm interested in moving Grimsby Town on and up. I want to kick this place on.

"If we get a good start to next season there's no reason why we can't reach halfway. We must keep the momentum going."

With relegation worries out of the way Lawrence told the Grimsby Telegraph of his wishes for next season regarding players like Donovan. "I can't keep him here unless we're in the first division and I badly want to keep him," said Lawrence. "If we're in the first division he's got a choice, us or somebody else. If we're in the second, there's no choice for him and he'll go. I want to give him a choice."

But Lennie also gave an indication of his intentions of a clear out by adding "We don't need to keep those who haven't played a part, though there have been mitigating factors in some cases."
