The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Cod Head of the Week: Peter Forrester

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/05/2001

This site is written by fans for fans and each week we interview a prominent "Cod Head" as part our commitment to fans of Grimsby Town FC. We regularly need new cod heads, so would appreciate contributions from lifelong supporters of the Mariners. This week's Cod Head is Peter Forrester.

Fishy:
Tell us a bit about yourself?

Peter:
My name is Peter Forrester. I have been a Town fan since moving here from London. I am a student at Clee Sixth Form and regularly attend games.

Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?

Peter:
I first started supporting Town when I moved here 9 years ago and the first game I went to was a 1-0 beating of Swansea.

Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?

Peter:
One of my fave past players has been former keeper Steve Sherwood for his sheer presence and great shot-stopping abilities. But more recently I think Alan Pouton will develop into a great player.

Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?

Peter:
Leicester 1-3 Grimsby 3. One of the best games I have ever seen. Everyone played with heart in the second half and we totally deserved to win. The fact Leicester were defending champions made it even more special to the Town faithful. Even though one of the goals was a lucky one it was good fun seeing Walsh break his arm.

Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?

Peter:
My fave away ground is Anfield. The atmosphere there was absolutely fantastic. Least fave: Valley Parade. The seating arrangements in away end are rubbish with no leg room.

Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?

Peter:
Although everyone may think the Wembley season was the best5 i feel the season we bounced back from Div 2 to finish 11th in Div 1 was our best for the sheer fact we proved everybody wrong.
Our worst has to be when we got relegated in 96/97. Even beating Southend 4-0 on the last day couldn't save us.

Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?

Peter:
One of my most eventful was going to Hillsbrough in the Coca Cola Cup. We won on aggregate and the performance was great but the stewards ruined the day by being strict and not allowing us to celebrate much. Still the bus journey home was great with all the singing of us going to Wembley.

Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?

Peter:
Alan Buckley without question. He got us to where we are today and no Town fan should ever forget him.

Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?

Peter:
I used to get season tickets up to last season but now I can't afford it but I still try to go as often as I can. If I can't get to the game I am listening eagerly on the radio.

Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?

Peter:

1. Steve Sherwood
2. Macca
3. Croft
4. Lever
5. Rodger
6. Widdrington
7. Donovan
8. Gilbert
9. Woods
10. Lester
11.Groves
