Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Monster Midfield Signing?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 20/06/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE is in the hunt for second division Reading's out-of-contract midfielder Darren Caskey. Town face competition from newly-promoted Millwall, who are also reported to be chasing the 27-year-old former Spurs star, said to be looking to leave Berkshire to join a First Division club.

Caskey's agent Eric Hall (top) confirmed Grimsby's interest in the ex-England Under-18 Captain: "I've spoken to Lennie Lawrence and we'll be having another chat next week. Grimsby are one of four clubs interested in Darren with Millwall being very keen as well. Darren is looking to play at a higher level next season which might rule out the two others - who knows, it's very early to say right now."

Caskey Caskey's (left) transfer from Spurs to Reading in February 1996 smashed the Royal's transfer record, and he made his debut against Watford on the 2nd of March 1996. He is an An FA School of Excellence graduate, he was skipper in an England Under-18 team containing Sol Campbell and Robbie Fowler to victory in the 1993 UEFA Championships. He scored a penalty which beat Turkey in the final.

He made his Premiership debut at White Hart Lane in January 1994, but couldn't command a first team place, and after a loan spell at Watford he joined the Royals. He had a delayed start to his Reading career due to a broken leg, but once fit he became a regular choice and has been in excellent form since.

In the 1999/2000 season, he scored 23 goals from midfield and won the Player of the Year award as well as being voted into the Division Two PFA Select XI.

Last season he scored 10 goals from midfield and is highly rated by a number of first division managers.
