Clare's Carlisle Transfer Aborted

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/07/2001

DARYL CLARE's move to Carlisle United looks to have broken down as the Cumbrian outfit are facing financial difficulties. The Grimsby Town striker verbally agreed a two-year deal earlier in the week, but with five players being sacked by the Blues on Friday, the transfer now looks off.

Blues quintet Carl Heggs, Steve Soley, Mick Galloway, Lee Maddison and Stephen Halliday were all called into Financial Director Andrea Whittaker's office, where the players were told that their contracts had been terminated and they were not to return to the club under any circumstances. Three other players had offers of contracts withdrawn.

Carlisle are believed to have terminated the players contracts as they were unable to pay their wages, making Clare extremely unlikely to commit pen to paper on an effectively worthless document.

Today Carlisle United manager Ian Atkins has departed for the Cardiff City Assistant Manager vacancy, leaving the Cumbrians down to five players and no coaching staff!

Lennie Lawrence handed the Jersey-born striker a free transfer at the end of last season. The Grimsby boss waived the Mariners' right to a tribunal fee under the Bosman ruling because of his age, allowing Clare to find a new club before the start of the current season.

Boston United and Northampton were two of the clubs who showed an interest in Clare, before Carlisle made the 22-year-old forward an offer, but both are unlikely to renew their interest in the Channel Islander, as they have since found other players in the same position. Lincoln City manager Alan Buckley may be tempted to take advantage of the situation and make a move for a player whom he introduced to the professional game.
