A TEAM of Grimsby supporters has reached the second round of the Worthington Fives National five-a-side tournament. The competition is the first of its kind that gives ordinary fans the chance to represent their favourite football side.

Matty Perry, Wayne Smith, Stuart Wade, Carl Harrison, Wayne Pulford (Captain) and Mark Storey answered an advert appearing on Mariners Net and, after beating another team of Town supporters in a preliminary round in Nottingham, made it through to the competition proper.

In their first match of the tournament the Grimsby Fives defeated Lincoln City, ironically Town's opponents this week in the cup bearing the same name, 9-3.

The team now have been drawn against Hartlepool in the second round at Nottingham's Powerleague Soccer Centre, with the prospect of appearing live on Sky Sports if they progress to the final in a curtain raiser to the next February's Worthington Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The winning side will also qualify for a similar style European "Champions League" tournament of winning teams of supporters drawn from clubs across the continent.

The remaining rounds of the competition take place throughout the season in the East Midlands at the Powerleague Soccer Centre in Nottingham, with the Hartlepool fixture due to take place on September 9th.
