Coyne: Concentrate on the League

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 11/10/2001

Grimsby Town fans are still in a state of euphoria after the Mariners defeated Liverpool in the Worthington Cup on Tuesday night. The club have also benefited financially with a figure of 100,000 pounds quoted. The club shop is also reporting increased sales since the Liverpool game.

But thoughts now must change to Grimsby's league games and the game against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Grimsby's hero goalkeeper, who the Grimsby Telegraph stated had "seen his value soar with a phenomenal performance against Liverpool" said the Mariners must ride the Anfield euphoria into Bramall Lane.

"We've got to come down to Earth and do the same again. It's no use doing it in the Cup if we're going to lose in the League. We need a win,"

"The confidence we have now should be right up there and we know that this division is very hard and Sheffield are a good side. They won't make it easy for us. We have got to knuckle down and do exactly what we did on Tuesday night to stop the ball from going in the net. We have to go forward and build on what we did on Tuesday."

On the Liverpool game he said, "I had quite a bit to do but the shots were all things that I should have kept out. I wouldn't have been very happy if any of them had gone in because they were all blocks and stuff I should be saving. They never scored in open play and they only got a penalty. It was just a great night for us."

"People were getting in the way of shots and they were throwing their bodies all over the place and it worked. A lot of credit should go to all the defenders."

"The Town fans were unbelievable and they made so much noise all the way through the game. Even when we went behind. But I couldn't believe the Kop's reception. They always applaud the keeper who goes to that end but when I went for a second time I couldn't believe it. They all stood up and applauded me."

"It's really weird. You see it on the TV after and we've been talking about it at training this morning. It was brilliant, but it hasn't sunk in yet. But what happened, I just can't put it into words. To go and do what we did was out of this world. It was magic.

".…I don't think anybody would have kept it out - except Steve Croudson!!…."

"When Marlon's goal went in we thought that we had to hang on for penalties. Then Jevvo hit that shot and I thought it had gone over until I saw it bounce down in the net. I didn't know what to do so I just stood there with my hands in the air. It was like watching it in slow motion as all the boys were running around everywhere to celebrate."

"It was one of the best goals I've ever seen in a game I've played in. What the ball did in the air - it was all over the place. And to beat a goalie the size of Chris Kirkland was brilliant. I don't think anybody would have kept it out - except Steve Croudson!"

On Wales Danny said: "Mark Hughes had a chat with me before the game in the Millennium Stadium and he just thanked me for coming. He said he knew that I'd missed a first team game to be there but said that, hopefully, I'd be a part of his plans for the future, so that was a boost.

"The World Cup campaign is over now so he might want to bring some young players in, but that's down to him. I'll just keep playing and try keep my performances up until then."
