Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Beharall Slips Through the Net

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/11/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE has resigned himself to losing David Beharall after accepting that the Newcastle defender had little choice but to take up an offer to move to Oldham Athletic until the end of the season on loan.

Beharall's alternative to moving to Boundary Park was to wait and see if the GTFC board come up with the cash to secure a loan move for him until the end of the season at Grimsby. Beharall had spent three months on loan at Blundell Park before his short-term loan quota came to an end.

"In fairness to David he's always expressed an interest in staying and I think that would have been his first choice." explained Lennie Lawrence. "He's had an offer to go to Oldham and that came about because Mick Wadsworth, whose the new manager at Oldham, used to be reserve team manager at Newcastle, so that's were the connection is.

"They've given him a nice little package and to be fair to the player it was no good me asking him to hang on for two or three weeks. I've wished him good luck and I hope he does well there."

Lawrence did however manage to hang on to fellow loanee Marlon Broomes last week for another month's loan spell at Blundell Park. The Town boss could, though, face a similar dilemma in a month's time - should he wish to extend the former England-U21 defender's loan - if other clubs come in for Broomes and snatch the Blackburn defender from under Town's noses while the board dither over finances.
